THE OCEAN COUNTY Department of Parks and Recreation and the Ocean County Department of Veterans Services are encouraging veterans to mingle with nature with the launch of the Veterans in Nature Program.
"We often hear that spending quality time outdoors has positive effects on our general health and wellbeing," said Ocean County Commissioner Robert S. Arace, who serves as liaison to both the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Veterans Services. "Research shows that veterans particularly benefit from outdoor activities that can supplement treatment for disabilities and injuries, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
"We are excited to provide this opportunity specifically for our veterans who may not have the chance to get out in nature otherwise," Arace said.
The Veterans in Nature series will host four programs to begin, with the anticipation to have programs for each season. In addition, representatives from the Ocean County Department of Veterans Services will be available to assist and provide information on resources.
"Ocean County is home to the largest veteran population in New Jersey," said the Director of the Ocean County Board of Commissioners John P. Kelly. "I commend the Ocean County Departments of Parks and Recreation and Veterans Services for this partnership that offers our veterans a safe way to enjoy the outdoors."
The first round of programs begins on April 15 and will include introduction to stand up paddle boarding, bird watching, photography 101 and basic kayaking. Information on each program can be found in the Ocean County Parks and Recreation spring program guide, which is currently available online at
www.oceancountyparks.org. Cost for each program is $5 per person; veterans may bring one non-veteran guest and will need to provide a military ID for registration.
To register for the program, residents can access the program registration form at

Completed forms can then be mailed or dropped off in person to Jakes Branch County Park (110 Double Trouble Road, Beachwood), Wells Mills County Park (905 Route 532, Waretown) or the Ocean County Parks Administration Building (1198 Bandon Road, Toms River). Those in need of assistance can call 732-506-9090.
"Veterans are encouraged to take part in this great opportunity to explore nature and try something new," said Arace. "We look forward to continuing this program in the coming seasons too."
