Lighting the Way
The Ocean County Board of Commissioners joined residents, local officials, and members of the Jewish community to celebrate Hanukkah during the County’s annual Menorah Lighting ceremony on Dec. 15 at the Ocean County Administration Building in Toms River.
“Hanukkah is truly a season of miracles, a time that inspires hope and reminds us of our resilience.” said Deputy Director of the Ocean County Board of Commissioners Frank Sadehgi, who spoke during the lighting. “As we light the menorah tonight, let us remember that your presence and friendship are lights that brighten our community.”
Sadeghi was joined by Commissioners Virginia E. Haines and Jennifier Bacchioine, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer, Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy, Commissioner-Elect Sam Ellenbogen, and a host of Ocean County government staff members. Michael Waldner of the Toms River Jewish Community Council led the ceremony, and Rabbi Moshe Gourarie of Chabad of Toms River lit two candles for the second night of Hanukkah.
Often called the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and celebrates the ideals of Judaism. The eight-day holiday is marked by lighting the menorah, sharing traditional foods, playing games, and giving gifts. This year, Hanukkah began on the evening of Dec. 14 and concludes on Dec. 22.
