Restoring the Shoreline
Continuing the ongoing efforts to restore the shoreline at Cattus Island County Park, the Ocean County Board of Commissioners and the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation hosted project stakeholders on a boat trip to investigate the shore of the Barnegat Bay to see where nature’s wear and tear has hit the hardest. The six-phase project, which is being funded in part by grants, aims to restore the eroding shoreline by creating a living shoreline – a protected, stabilized coastal edge that can grow over time, made of natural materials such as plants, sand, or rock. The goal is to also increase recreation areas, protect park infrastructures, increase wildlife opportunities and become a better buffer for the community in the event of tidal flooding. Partners of the project include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited, Stevens Institute, the Barnegat Bay Partnership, the state Department of Environmental Protection, Ocean County Planning Department and Colliers engineering firm.
