A Message from the Ocean County Board of Commissioners

As we celebrate Ocean County’s 175th anniversary, we look back at its history – the enduring value of its past – and we look forward to its very bright future.

Ocean County is clearly different from its early days. Today we are a county of more than 650,000 people, a number that more than doubles during the summer months. We maintain more than 1,600 county lane miles, are home to more than 30,000 veterans and over 200,000 seniors. Ocean County College was the first two-year college in the state of New Jersey and our Vocational Technical Schools are award winning. We have 27 County parks, two county run golf courses, nearly 30,000 acres of preserved open space and 5,500 acres of preserved farmland.

As you explore this page, you will see pieces of our history and our celebration of the last 175 years. In addition, you will find contests and events that will occur as the year-long celebration continues. This is a County of opportunities and of perseverance. We are happy to move forward making certain Ocean County is the best place to live, work, raise a family and retire.

2025 Time Capsule

More than 60 items from nearly 30 Ocean County Government departments and agencies were placed in the time capsule buried on Feb. 27. Fifty years from now, citizens will get to see a little bit of the history of Ocean County Government. Many Government departments provided items representative of Ocean County government including patches and pins, pamphlets, brochures, information on the economy, our programs and services including Natural Lands, Recycling and senior resource guides, and personalized notes from the current Board of Commissioners.
