Ocean County Adjuster's Office

Responsibilities

The County Adjuster’s mission primarily focuses on the preparation and supervision of all documentation related to the commitment of County residents with mental illness and developmental disabilities to Federal, State, County, and private facilities. The Ocean County Adjuster is charged with the responsibility of scheduling court hearings within the specific time frames for these individuals and is required by law to ensure individuals have representation at these hearings.

The Office is responsible to cover the cost of care at any State facility for its residents without health insurance. County residency and ability to pay for treatment is determined by our office investigating the patient’s which is then provided to the New Jersey Superior Court who, in turn, issues an order indicating the County’s financial responsibility, if any, the patient or relative is responsible for at this time. The family and/or client amount is billed by the Adjuster directly.

The County Adjuster is responsible to research an individual’s mental health history for local and state police departments when an individual is applying for a gun permit. Our Office utilizes State databases to research the applicant and return findings to the local police department for their action on the application.
