Ocean County Press Release

OCEAN COUNTY residents who filed the application for the state ANCHOR program are currently seeing benefits in their bank accounts.

"We want to make sure our residents, especially our seniors, are aware they will be receiving this money between now and the beginning of May so long as they met the application deadline and the program requirements," said Director of the Ocean County Board of Commissioners Joseph H. Vicari, chairman of the Office of Senior Services. "Our senior services office worked with many of our seniors to assist with information on applications."

According to the state, homeowners with incomes of $150,000 or less will receive $1,500 under the ANCHOR program; homeowners with incomes of more than $150,000 and up to $250,000 will receive $1,000 and renters with incomes of $150,000 or less will receive $450 under the program.

"While this program was open to property owners and renters of all ages, we wanted to make sure our seniors were not confused by this new program with any other property relief benefit like the Senior Freeze Program they may be receiving," Vicari said.

The ANCHOR replaces the Homestead Benefit program.

Vicari noted he was a champion of securing the Homestead Rebate program for residents bringing his support directly to officials in the statehouse.

"These programs are so important to all of our residents," Vicari said. "It was imperative the state continue with a tax rebate program such as the ANCHOR program."

Vicari also cautioned seniors about scammers who may call about the money.

"No one should be calling you asking about the rebate," Vicari said. "Never provide personal information over the phone when asked."

The Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) Program application deadline was Feb. 28. ANCHOR benefits will be paid by the state starting in the spring of 2023. Some applicants will receive direct deposit while others will receive a paper check based on what the applicant requested.

Eligible homeowners were able to apply online, by phone or upload or mail a paper application and necessary attachments using the state's electronic filing systems. Renters had all the same options to apply accept for by phone.

The state has set up a ANCHOR benefit hotline for assistance: 1-888-238-1233. Information also is available online at nj.gov/taxation.

"Ocean County is home to 200,000 and many are on fixed incomes including just Social Security," Vicari said. "We want to make certain they are aware these benefits are now being sent out by the state of New Jersey."
