WARETOWN – Wells Mills County Park, here, home to miles of hiking trails, will be featured during the annual National Trails Day celebration scheduled for June 3.
"Wells Mills County Park has the distinction of being the largest park in the Ocean County park system with more than 900 acres of pine and oak forest within the Pine Barrens," said Ocean County Commissioner Virginia E. Haines, chairwoman of the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation. "Miles of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty made this park the perfect location to celebrate National Trails Day."
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 3, residents and visitors are invited to participate in a family-friendly event at Wells Mills County Park, Route 532, here. With more than 27 miles of marked trails, participants can enjoy a hike or tour the Cedarview Lodge, a 1937 cabin that was a favorite place of the Albert brothers to play their music.
In addition, visitors can tour the newly renovated Wells Mills Nature Center. Outdoor family games and crafts will also be available.
"This is a great opportunity to learn more about Wells Mills County Park," Haines said. "This is a great day for us to highlight all this beautiful park has to offer."
Taking place on the first Saturday in June, National Trails Day, sponsored by the American Hiking Organization, is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. Tens of thousands of hikers, bikers, paddlers, horseback riders, trail clubs, federal and local agencies, land trusts, and businesses come together in partnership to advocate for, maintain, and clean up public lands and trails.
"I encourage our residents to participate in this event," said Director of the Ocean County Board of Commissioners Joseph H. Vicari. "If you can't make it to Wells Mills County Park, certainly we want you to visit any of the 27 parks operated by the County and use the many trails throughout the entire park system. It's a great day to be out and enjoying what Ocean County has to offer." |
