Ocean County Press Release

9/22/2023 - Forecasted High Winds Cause Changes to Ocean County's Annual Decoy and Gunning Show Schedule

TUCKERTON – The Old Time Barnegat Bay Decoy and Gunning Show will not be held Saturday, Sept. 23 at Tip Seaman County Park, here, due to forecasted high winds. Show activities are scheduled to resume as planned at the park on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Any planned show activities for the Tuckerton Seaport, Route 9, here, will go on as scheduled both Saturday and Sunday.

"While the decoy show is usually a rain or shine event, for the safety of our patrons, vendors and staff, it is important that we take the necessary precautions with this Saturday's forecast," said Ocean County Commissioner Virginia E. Haines, who serves as Chairwoman to the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation. "We anticipate the show will open as planned at 7 a.m. Sunday morning."

Show updates can be found on the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation website at www.OceanCountyParks.org, or Facebook page at www.facebook.com/OceanCountyParks/

"The decoy show is a free family friendly event and a great learning experience for residents and visitors to understand life as we know it on the Barnegat Bay," said Haines. "The rich traditions of the men and women who once earned their livelihoods from our local waters and surrounding lands is a lifestyle that we continue to honor to this day."

Now in its 41st year, show activities on Sunday will include skeet shooting along with competitions in carving, calling, retrieving and boat building. In addition, music by Pinelands' musicians will be playing at both sites throughout the festivities. There will also be vendors offering duck calls, sporting artwork, decorative carvings, model boats, guided hunt services, hunting dog supplies, and more.

Also featured will be retriever contests and the Dock Dog competitions. The highlight of the annual awards ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, is the presentation of the Hurley Conklin Award, which is awarded to individuals who have lived their lives in the traditions preserved by the show.
