10/28/2026 - Ocean County Launches Text Line to Connect Residents with Community Resources |
OCEAN COUNTY residents can now find information about local programs and services by texting the Age-Friendly Ocean County Text Line at 848-266-6981.
Launched Sept. 11, 2026, the free service connects older adults, adults with disabilities, caregivers and families with resources for transportation, meals, housing, health care, social activities, caregiving assistance and more. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the service supports multiple languages and requires no app download or registration.
"Access to reliable information about available services is essential to helping older adults remain healthy, independent and connected to their communities," said Ocean County Commissioner Robert S. Arace, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Office of Senior Services. "This new service gives residents a simple, convenient way to find the assistance they need."
Residents can text questions in their preferred language and receive information about relevant local resources. Messages do not need to be perfectly spelled or written.
During pilot testing from June through September 2026, the Text Line recorded 111 unique users and 571 resource referrals, reaching residents in 16 of Ocean County's 33 municipalities. Transportation, housing and meals were the most frequently requested topics, followed by community activities, social connection and home care.
The initiative supports the County's 2026–2030 Multisector Plan for Aging, which prioritizes housing, transportation, health care, food security, caregiving and social connection.
"Our goal is to make it easier for older adults and caregivers to find the information and support they need," said Maria La Face, director of the Ocean County Office of Senior Services. "The Age-Friendly Ocean County Text Line provides another convenient way to connect residents with programs and services that support their independence, health and well-being."
The initiative brings together Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County, the Rutgers Hub for Aging Collaboration and technology partner Bridge Social. The Grunin Foundation provided seed funding. The project team continues to update the resource database and evaluate community needs.
Community organizations, libraries, senior centers, retirement communities, health care providers and municipal offices are encouraged to share information about the service.
