The Division of Weights and Measures is a branch of the Consumer Affairs Department and operates under the statutory authority of New Jersey Statutes Title 51.
The Division is responsible for certifying the accuracy of all weighing and measuring devices used in commercial transactions.
In order to keep the marketplace fair and equitable the Division inspects scales, gasoline dispensers and home heating oil trucks as well as prescription balances, timing and length measuring devices for accuracy.
We also do a considerable amount of package checking to make sure that what is stated on the label is correct as to weight, measure or count. Scanning audits are also performed to insure accurate pricing.
All businesses must have the Weights and Measures Registration as required by the State of New Jersey for devices used in commercial transactions.
Businesses and consumers can contact the Division at 732.929.2166.
