Custody staff must be selected from the current Civil Service List.
Inclusion on this list is accomplished by taking the Juvenile Detention Officer examination that is periodically given by the New Jersey Department of Personnel.
Non-custody staff employment is also under Civil Service regulations.
The dates for the test and new job postings can be obtained by accessing the
State of New Jersey Department of Personnel web site.
Applications for employment are available online at the
Department of Employee Relations website, and can also be picked up at the Department of Juvenile Services on Sunset Ave. or at the County Administration building on Hooper Ave. in downtown Toms River.
Training
All staff members, new or experienced, receive continuous training throughout the year.
New employees attend over 120 hours of training in their first year and more than 60 hours each additional year.
The Center utilizes both in-house and outside professional training services. Outside sources include
NJ Department of Corrections and
NJ Division of Youth and Family Services.
In-house training sources include experienced and certified staff members or supervisors, certified professionals (such as CPR trainers), and visiting specialists or experts in specific fields or techniques.
