Master Composter Volunteer Program

The Ocean County Master Composter Training Program, which received an NJDEP award in 2008 for Outstanding Achievement in Recycling/Educational Program, is offered once annually (subject to demand) to train a knowledgeable core of citizens who can provide the residents of Ocean County with information on how they can manage the organic portions of their solid waste.

The premise of this 12-hour program is for the county to train volunteers, who then agree to provide a total of 24 hours of outreach, education, and service to promote the benefits of home composting. Training is held at the Ocean County Recycling Education Center, located at the county's Northern Recycling Center in Lakewood Township.

This program is provided free of charge to Ocean County residents and taxpayers. The non-resident fee is $75.00 per person. Non-residents must also complete their outreach commitment within Ocean County.

Each applicant must complete an application and obtain sponsorship by a group, in order to ensure the program continued opportunities to establish an outreach network. Many types of groups can sponsor an applicant, including: garden clubs, municipalities, environmental commissions, recycling committees, retirement communities and service clubs.

If you see an opportunity to volunteer for one of these events, please call Sandra Blain-Snow at (732) 506-5047 or email compost@co.ocean.nj.us
