The Ocean County Board of Commissioners in conjunction with the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission are honoring the memory of the involvement of Ocean County in the American Civil War (1861-1865).
“Preparations continue to honor Ocean County involvement in the American Civil War (1861-1865). We understand that over 800 veterans of that conflict are buried in Ocean County graves. Many others were laid to rest on distant battlefields throughout our torn nation. We hope to make some of their stories available to you during the coming years. The New Jersey Ninth Regiment was famous as a crack group of sharp shooters. Many of their members were baymen and hunters from Ocean County.” Commissioner John C. Bartlett, Jr.
The 150th anniversary of the Civil War will be commemorated throughout the United States from 2011 thru 2015. Although there were no battles fought in New Jersey, Ocean County residents and those who had an impact on Ocean County played significant roles in that nation defining conflict. This part of our website will share photos, pension records, and stories of soldiers, statesmen, and citizens reflecting our proud history during that conflict and the history of honoring those who served.
